Position: Graduate Applied Science Engineer
Location: Cardiff, UK
Job Type: Permanent
Shift Pattern: Monday to Friday, 37 hours per week
Summary
Support the design, development and implementation of transducers and technical solutions for the detection of physiological parameters.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:-
- Conduct research and development to design and optimize ultrasonic transducers for use in fetal monitors and vascular assessment devices utilising Doppler technology.
- Investigate new technologies to enhance existing transducer performance and reliability.
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in the detection & monitoring of physiological vital signs parameters, including maternal contractions, maternal heart rate, fetal heart rate, fetal movement.
- Develop and utilize advanced simulation tools to model ultrasonic wave propagation and transducer behaviour for integration into medical devices.
- Design, build, and rigorously test prototypes to validate design concepts and performance.
- Perform detailed acoustic and mechanical testing of transducers to ensure they meet design specifications and regulatory standards.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, software developers and clinical experts
The Graduate Applied Science Engineer will have the following responsibilities:
Build Quality into all aspects of their work by maintaining compliance to all quality requirements.
Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
• Experience or university exposure to MATLAB, Python, or modelling software.
• Strong understanding of ultrasonic principles including the Doppler Shift.
• Knowledge of ultrasound/acoustic wave theory.
• Understanding of materials science and thermodynamics.
• Fundamentals of signal processing.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a research-focused team environment.
Desireable Knowledge/Skills/Experience:
• Knowledge of electronics and real-time embedded systems design.
• Experience with simulation and modelling software (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS).
• Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, C.
• Previous research experience or projects related to ultrasonic transducer development.
• Familiarity with design verification and validation processes.
• Knowledge of regulatory standards for medical devices.
• Understanding of materials science and thermodynamics.
• Experience with design control and risk management activities.
Qualifications:
Minimum of a 2.2 Degree in Physics, Medical Engineering or related Engineering Degree.
